A Ksar is a three-story building, built of rammed earth and fortified with corner towers to depict the Berber style of residences in southern Morocco.

The classic Arabic word qasr denotes a castle or a royal castle. From al-qasr, the Spanish term Alcázar (fortress) results from a joined Arabian article. Al-qasr is derived from the Latin “Castrum”, which is translated into castle or fortress.

In Morocco, the term Ksar refers to a fortified, permanently inhabited village, which may consist of several or partially nested residential castles (e.g.Ait Benhaddou, High Atlas) or, in a few cases, surrounded by a closed wall (e.g. Tizourgane, Anti-Atlas).

A uniform planning of the Moroccan Ksour is only to be found in the area of Rissani (Ksar Abouam, Ksar Abbar and others) built by the Alawids Ksour. In the rural Ksour Morocco only or rarely existing / preserved walls are seen in joint work. Unreinforced villages are usually called Douar in Morocco (e.g. Amtoudi).

Due to the modernization of the living conditions, lack of rainfalls, continuous migration to larger cities and the pacification of the Berber tribes almost all Ksour of the Maghreb have been rendered functionless, almost into a state of ruins. The survival of these buildingsmay be possible only as a tourist attraction or as a film backdrop, where the architectural restoration could be attained through the revenues received.

Mehdi has grown up in a Ksar in Rissani and knows about the socially important values of the community in a Ksar. It is not only an imposing fortresses but also provided an important habitat to garner close communities.

“Marrakech in style” supports the Ksar in Rissani, where Mehdi lived until his 12th year. From each trip booked through us, we will automatically give EUR 5to our “Ksar-finansial-support”.

In this context: We also offer an unforgettable trip (* Ksar tour), which leads to the south of Morocco. On this great tour, you can visit this project close to our hearts. “To protect the Ksar” and visit the Ksar in person – marhababikum!
